INSAT System was a joint venture between Department of Space and various user agencies like Department of Telecommunications, Doordarshan, AIR, Indian Metereological Department.
INSAT System is the only system with multipurpose functions like mass communications, telecommunications and metereological studies (three-in-one), where as the satellites of other countries in geostationary orbit have single purpose.
Based on the tremendous experience gained with the successful launch of APPLE in 1981, India’s first communication satellite, Indian scientists conceptualised the INSAT series as multipurpose satellites. This multipurpose satellite system was adopted as separate satellite for different purposes would enhance the cost by about 60%. But, under this multipurpose system, the functional capacity of these different purposes is reduced.
With the launching of METSAT & EDUSAT, ISRO is planning for dedicated satellites instead of multipurpose satellites.
The INSAT Systems in operation at present consists mainly of 7 satellites –
INSAT 2E, INSAT 3B, INSAT 3C, INSAT 3E, INSAT 3A, INSAT 4A and INSAT 4B. In addition, Kalpana-1 and EDUSAT are two related satellites part of INSAT series.
The services offered by INSAT series satellites are:
- Offering telecommunication services like long distance telephone calls and mobile telephone telephone services.
- Telecasting of television programmes
- Water forecasting
- Transmitting cyclone warnings to coastal villages
- Beaming distress signals from ships
- Providing interactive training to officials and people at the field level.
- Facilitating distance education programmes by Indira Gandhi National Open University
- Telemedicine
- Satellite navigation
