Q) Write a brief note on any 5 of the infrastructure establishments of the Department of Space.
Answer :
The Space programme is administered under the Development of Space (DOS), Government of India. The major establishments of DOS are:
1. ISRO:
Head quarters located at Bangalore
It looks after planning, execution and management of space research activities and space application programmes of the DOS.
2. VSSC:
It is the chief research and development centre for launch vehicle technology. It also produces propellants and rocket hardware.
VSSC manages the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS) located near Thiruvananthapuram.
3. ISAC (Isro Satellite Centre):
Located at Peenya near Bangalore. It is responsible for the design and fabrication of satellites and development of satellite technology.
At present IRS and INSAT series of satellites are being built in this centre.
4. SAC:
Space Application Centre located at Ahmedabad aims at using space science and technology for practical benefits.
5. SHAR:
Srihari Kota High Altitude and Ranging, renamed as Satish Dhawan space Centre at Sriharikota island (Nellore district).
This range has facilities for launching large multistage sounding rockets and satellite launch vehicles.
6. LPSC:
Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre is the key centre for development of liquid propulsion systems.
This centre undertakes research, development and testing liquid propulsion system for ISRO’s launch vehicle and satellite programme.
7. MCF:
Master Control Facility located at Hassan in Karnataka is responsible for all post-launch operations on INSAT and GSAT including orbital maneuvers, station keeping and in-orbit operations on the space craft.
Second centre has been started at Bhopal.
8. STARS:
Satellite Tracking and Ranging System located at Kodaloor (Tamilnadu).
To know the height and orbit of the satellites.
9. PRL:
Physical research Laboratories to sstudy cosmic rays.
10. National Remote Sensing Agency:
Analyses the Photos and other signals from satellites.
